
Fiona Kearney is currently employed as the Laboratory Manager at the Centre for Laboratory Medicine and Molecular Pathology in St James’s Hospital. Fiona has the pleasure of managing 14 different laboratories including the largest Blood transfusion laboratory in the country, the National Coagulation Laboratory, the Haematology and Cryobiology Stem cell laboratories who support the adult bone marrow transplant program including Car-T therapies as well as our Cancer Molecular and Haemostasis Molecular Diagnostics laboratories and our reference laboratories - National MRSAL Reference laboratory, the Irish Mycobacterium Reference laboratory and the Gonococcal Reference laboratory. In addition, Fiona manages the Phlebotomy team, the Mortuary team, the Biobank team and the Administration team. Fiona has been in this role for the past 4 years taking over from her predecessor, John Gibbons. Previously, Fiona worked in the Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) for over 20 years including managing the Quality Control, Environmental monitoring and Materials management laboratories in the National Blood Centre and the Munster Regional Transfusion Centre, and was a Chief Medical scientist in the NAT laboratory for virology screening of blood donors. In addition to her BSc and MSc, Fiona also holds a Masters’ in Business Practice in the areas of Management, Strategy & Innovation, and Leadership from UCC. One of her most recent accomplishments has been to implement a dedicated cloud hosted solution to the analysis and storage of molecular data from our laboratory sequencers across six different laboratories in Microsoft Azure as supported by the HSE.
