Dr. Éimear Smith is a Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine at the National Rehabilitation & Mater Misericordiae University Hospitals. Following higher specialist training in Rehabilitation Medicine in Dublin, she completed sub-specialist training in spinal cord injury (SCI) medicine/rehabilitation at the London Spinal Cord Injury Centre. Higher research degree (MD) was awarded for a study on bone health following SCI, brain injury and limb absence/loss. Areas of special clinical interest are acute traumatic SCI care including ventilatory management, paediatric SCI, restoration of upper limb function in tetraplegia and long-term autonomic/medical complications of SCI. Dr. Smith is the clinical co-lead of the rehabilitation workstream of the National Office for Trauma Services; member & past president of the Irish Association of Rehabilitation Medicine; former national speciality director for Rehabilitation Medicine. She is a member of the board of directors of Spinal Injuries Ireland and care committee of the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) Charitable Trust. Dr. Smith is an associate editor of “Topics in Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation” and a member of the scientific committee of the INSPIRE foundation. She is a member of the American Spinal Injuries Association (ASIA) paediatric & communications committees, former member of the education committee; a past member of the International Spinal Cord Society (ISCoS) scientific committee; a committee member & conference organiser (2022 -2025 inclusive) of the Multi-disciplinary Association of Spinal Cord Injury Professionals (MASCIP) UK/Ireland. Dr. Smith has peer reviewed publications on many aspects of SCI including patient/ public involvement in preclinical SCI research, epidemiology, pain management, nontraumatic SCI outcomes and osteoporosis.
