Dr Michelle Roche is an Associate Professor in Physiology and Co-Director of the Centre for Pain Research at the University of Galway, Ireland. Her research focuses on advancing understanding of the neurobiology and pathophysiology underlying pain, mood disorders, autism, and their interactions. She has a particular interest in sex differences and in the role of neuro-immune and endocannabinoid systems. Her research has resulted in over 80 research manuscripts, reviews, and book chapters, and has been supported by national, European, and industry funding. Dr Roche leads or holds prominent roles in several international networks and societies, including serving as European Pain Federation (EFIC) Councillor, immediate-past President of the Irish Pain Society, and coordinator of international networks such as ERA-NET Neuron PAINDIFF and ENLIGHT PainNet. Patient involvement and participation are central to Dr Roche’s work. She works closely with patient organisations, including Chronic Pain Ireland, to ensure that her research and educational programmes are patient-focused, patient-informed, and shaped by lived experience.
